SportsDay recount from my autistic son
It's nearly the end of the summer term. That means Sports Day, and Anthony hates Sports Day. I'd have written 'hates' in all caps if my style guide would allow it. It is the worst day in every school year. Last year he had a medical appointment that meant he couldn't be at school for the event. As Anthony said, it was the 'best-timed appointment ever!'
This year would be his last Sports Day at Primary school and... there was no medical appointment. When I've the capacity I'll recount the day as I saw it. For us, Sports Day is often very little to do with sports. It's all the other things. Anthony is autistic, has ADHD, Dyspraxia and a few other things beside. He usually wears carbon fibre insoles to help correct his tiptoe walking too, but can't wear them in his trainers. He's actually pretty slim and fit looking - that's what jumping about all day on any given day will get you. But fitness isn't usually his battle.
I, of course, was proud of his every event on Sports Day... but his own recount below was probably the most joyous moment. I invite you to read 'Anthony's Sprint relay recount.'
Sports day 2019 - Sprint relay recount
It was the last race of the day and everyone came to watch my final race. I was the one to finish the race. Three people from my house ran before me and I was the last one to have the baton. When I got the baton I ran like a professional and won the race tin front of nearly 400 people.
Later on they announced the winner of sports day and it was my house. We felt happy. The next day in assembly I got a rosette for winning.
I really want to see a video of me racing as it might be interesting. Everyone said to me that I ran like a professional and I want to see how fast I was.
Sports day was better than I expected!
It's worth bearing in mind that Anthony, as with many autistic kids, struggles with language and writing in particular. I found this in his school bag this morning. I'm so pleased I did. Hope you have a day 'better than expected'.

What a gift you found, and shared with all of us. Thank you, and congratulations to Anthony. I think if we look hard enough, a lot of things may just be 'better than expected!' #KCACOLS xoxo

ReplyDeleteWhat a fantastic account of his day - so articulate. Brilliant not only that he survived the horror of sports day (my son would always turn around half way through his race and finish it backwards) but that he enjoyed it too.
ReplyDeleteThis is brilliant and so great for his last sports day at primary. I have to say I wasn't a fan of sports days growing up but I still remember winning the three legged race in primary school. #spectrumsunday
