WonderfulWednesday: #TimetoTalk with @YoungMindsUK
This last week's social media has been buzzing with mental health and has included a great push for Time to Talk Day 2017. As such it seems fitting that this week's wonderful Wednesday share is via Young Minds, a leading UK charity committed to improving the emotional wellbeing and mental health of children and young people.
YoungMinds blogger, George Bell, shares how talking helped him in their news. George says that when we are ill, we are quick to let people know, take time of work and give ourselves time to recover. George shares how important talking was to his mental health recovery. How it wasn't until he started talking, a year after he started having difficulty, that he was able to find support and move forward.
Did you know that 70% of people with autism experience some type of mental health issue? Studies have shown that in individuals with autism about 30% have Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and anxiety disorders in children with ASD has been reported to be anywhere between 11% and 84%.
We certainly understand about ASD and anxiety. Anxiety was picked up by a member of CAMHS when we were seeking some help for his ADHD and his difficulty in making decisions. We realised his worrying was far more than just being concerned about changes to routine or the pressure of making decisions. And we now have a few strategies to help when we recognise his anxiety. Giving him time to talk about things, when he wants to, is definitely one of them.
If you haven't looked at Young Minds, now is a great time to. And while you are there, why not read what George has to say too.
